xiros® Plastic Ball Bearings

For extreme applications

xiros® plastic ball bearings open new fields of application for plastic bearings.

The inner and outer races are made from high-performance iglide® materials. The corrosion-free balls are made from stainless steel. Glass balls are also available for maximum corrosion resistance.

xiros® plastic ball bearings made from the A500 material are temperature resistant up to 302° F, while those made from the B180 material are designed for temperatures up to 176° F.

Plastic ball bearing

When to use:

  • For rotational speeds that exceed the limit of a plain bearing
  • When corrosion resistance is required
  • For temperatures up to 302° F (depending on material)
  • When chemical resistance is required
  • If non-magnetic ball bearings are needed
  • When FDA compliance is needed (A500 with PEEK cage)

When not to use:

  • For high loads at high speeds
  • When very tight clearances are required

FAQs

As a manufacturer of polymer plain bearings, what prompted igus® to offer plastic ball bearings as well?
Our customers’ need for maintenance-free bearing solutions regularly lead us to develop new materials and products. Of course, we also watch the ball bearings’ market. We think that plastic ball-bearing technology hasn't been exhausted and won’t be for a long time yet. With our many years of experience in testing tribologically optimized plastics, we believe plastic ball bearings can advance a lot further.

What are plastic ball bearings made from? Which parts are actually made from plastic?
Plastic ball bearings are made from polymer cages, balls made from stainless steel or glass for maximum corrosion resistance, as well as inner and outer rings made from what we call “xirodur®” plastic. They are lightweight, resistant to corrosion and chemicals and offer a longer life at lower cost.

What makes xiros® plastic ball bearings from igus® so special?
Using tribo-optimized xirodur® high-performance palstics makes the need for bearing lubrication obsolete and also means the ball bearings are completely maintenance-free and dry-running.

Where does the name xiros® come from?
The name is derived from the Greek term for "dry" and signifies the dry operation of xiros® plastic ball bearings.

What advantages are offered by using xiros® plastic ball bearing technology in conjunction with the igubal® spherical bearing range?
Predominantly, greater flexibility and compensation for misalignment.
